Wedding season: It is here! Brides and grooms all over the world are walking down the aisle saying ‘I do’, and photographers are working long and hard to capture moments that couples will never be able to get back. So much happens leading up to the big day which is why it is a sigh of relief and achievement when it comes, and is all said and done.
Photographers share and enjoy the ride too! Oh yes! We get to know the couple and their close friends and family at engagement shoots, bridal parties, and rehearsal dinners. It’s a fun and personal journey that bonds a photographer with their couple, and when chosen – photographers should see it as a privilege. It is a privilege because when a couple chooses a photographer, they are selecting the person (or people) that will capture this special moment in their lives. With that said, below are five key tips on choosing a photographer if you are in search of one for your big day.
- Ask for referrals: Ask friends and family who have had weddings to see their wedding photos, and to tell you about their experience with their wedding day photographer. Most photographers get hired based on referrals. So you will more than likely get some good information from referrals from friends and family.
- Visit photography websites: Search photography websites to see the various types of styles that different photographers shoot. All photographers have a style. We all shoot and edit differently. So make sure that you are aware of the type of style of photography you like before choosing a photographer. This step is also great for the next step: Budget.
- Decide your budget: Once you’ve visited various photography websites, and viewed the various ranges in wedding day pricing, decide what budget range you can afford. If you cannot pay for your photos all at once, ask your selected photographer if they can take a retainer fee and arrange a payment plan.
- Do not go cheap on your photography package: These photographs are once-in-a-lifetime. You cannot get these moments back. Most brides regret when they skimp on good food and photography on their wedding day.
- Make sure that your photographer is a good fit for you: It is important that you not only pick a professional photographer, but that you also like them and get along with them. You want your photographer to be able to know you and your wedding day vision; and be able to get along with your guests while they are hunting for great pictures throughout your wedding day. Your photographer is the person that you are trusting to capture EVERYTHING. That’s a pretty big deal! So its best to have a good relationship in place so that you know this person has your best interest on the big day.
